London LDWA

Hello everyone

This week we've got an excellent midweek outing for you, and an update on the forthcoming "Founders'" challenge hike - which includes an invitation and an appeal!

So read on..

1. Dulwich and the Uppers (Wed 14)

Our first event this week comes on Wednesday evening, when Ian will leading a leading a 6 mile walk through delightful Dulwich.   His walk promises to visit the Uppers, before finishing near Crystal Palace.   So if you're not exactly sure what the "Uppers" are (and I have to admit I'm not sure if they are a nature reserve or a football team) then this is your opportunity to find out.   Be at Dulwich North rail station at 18.00 on Wednesday, and you'll be one step closer to being able to tell the Uppers from the Downs.

2. Founders' Marshals walk - an invitation (Sat 17)

Following hot on Ian's heels, on Saturday we've got no less than two walks to choose from.   So you're invited to select your sojourn from this scintillating smorgasbord of saunters, and join either Catherine or Douglas on a 16 or 27 mile (respectively) hike around beautiful Surrey, following the routes for the forthcoming "Founders'" challenge walk (which is being held on Sat 8 October).

These walks are aimed primarily at marshals and other helpers of the Founders walk, but are also open to other members who have never taken part in a challenge walk before and would like to understand better what is involved in one, and any members who would like a challenging walk at a brisk pace.

All the details of both walks are at the end of this email, with some important updated information, so please read it carefully!

Note in particular the following specific information about the 27 mile walk:
The plan for the 27 mile walk is to meet at Dorking Main Line Station at 8.41 (7.54 from Waterloo) for car transfer to the start point at Ranmore Common Road car park (near "Steer's Field). The walk will essentially be unsupported although we might be able to get some refreshments at Peaslake and Newlands Corner. So bring your own food and drink. The walk will be at a brisk pace, in order to finish in daylight. To help manage the logistics, if you want to go on the 27 mile walk, please contact Douglas beforehand either by email (london@ldwa.org.uk ) or phone (details at bottom of this email).

For the 16 mile walk. this will be a "normal" outing (i.e. no car transfer) from Gomshall rail station - all the details are at the end of this email.

The Hurtwood Inn

The Hurtwood Inn - refreshment close to the start and finish of the "Founders'" challenge
[But NB the Marshals' walks next weekend start and finish at different locations]

3. Founders Challenge Marshals - an appeal!

The Founders challenge event itself is coming up soon - it's less than a month away on Saturday 8 October.

We would welcome a few more people first thing at the start at Peaslake on Saturday 8th October. If you can be there for 7.30 it would help to ensure that everyone's car is parked tidily out of the way of the villagers - it gets very busy on a Saturday - and also provide a warm welcome for entrants, offering tea & biscuits and helping to make sandwiches for them to eat at the checkpoints.

If you use public transport & can catch the 0645 from Waterloo (0652 at Clapham Junction) we'll pick you up in Guildford at 0723 - & welcome you with tea & biscuits!

If you can't help on Saturday but could be in Peaslake on Friday evening from about 5.30 p.m. then we would also welcome your help in setting up the Hall.

If you think you can help, we'd be eternally grateful!   Please just contact Gordon Parker at founderschallenge@ldwa.org.uk to volunteer or find out more.

There's more about "Founders'" on the website at:

Well - with that mammoth update out of the way, I reckon it must be just about time to stop pretending you're reading a vital work email, grab a coffee and head over to your next meeting!

Have a great week

Adam
