Deerplay p.h. (currently closed), A617 Burnley Rd, nr Bacup (roadside parking), for a taxi journey to the start at the Lowry Centre, Salford Quays (Map LR 109, GR SJ805972)

This route runs from the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal along the River Irwell, to its headwaters in the South Pennines, taking in Salford, Bury and Bacup, in Rossendale. This is the largest and longest sculpture trail in the UK, exhibiting over 70 works of art, by local, national and international artists. The walk connects local heritage, landscape and communities, amidst a host of cultural attractions in general, from art galleries and museums to the East Lancashire Railway. A fascinating day out, packed full of interest and diversity, with plenty of good walking to underpin the venture. Something different! Cafe and pub stop
