London LDWA

Hello everyone

Yes it seems barely possible that it could be Monday already.

But this week is an extra special one for London LDWA, as on Saturday it brings us our first ever Capital Challenge hike.

This is a brand new challenge hike for London LDWA, and those with a keen memory might recall that it was first suggested to us by our membership at the 2016 AGM.   So over the last year and a bit, Gordon, Susanne, Douglas, Roderick and others too numerous to mention (and to whom I apologise if I have forgotten) have worked tirelessly to bring turn this germ of an idea into the magnificent blossoming creation we will witness on Saturday.

So, bright on early on April Fools Day morning (yes, really), 100 pioneering hikers will set off from underneath Waterloo Bridge on a 27 mile clockwise loop visiting some of London's finest sights.   There are checkpoints at the start at BFI (Waterloo), then at Paddington Station, Jack Straw's Castle, Finsbury Park and Hackney Henge and then finally at the finish at the View Tube (Stratford).   You can see more details by clicking here.

The effort that LDWA London has had to put into preparing for the Challenge means there is no social walk next weekend (though we do have a midweek Wednesday evening excursion AND a Friday Pop Up - see below).   But instead, if you're not on the event itself, you might like to situate yourself somewhere along the route and in true London marathon style, cheer the participants as they pass by.

Come along and cheer - participants start between 8 and 9 am and finish between 2 and 7 pm

But we haven't abandoned our social walk agenda completely this week, as on Wednesday evening, Peter will be leading us on an evening hike from Crystal Place to Nunhead.   He'll be taking the opportunity to explore part of the Green Chain Walk - one of London's numerous long distance paths - and if you're not familiar with this fascinating route, this will be an excellent opportunity to become acquainted.

So if you'd like to join Peter for this excellent original outing, just make your way to Crystal Palace Station for 18.00 on Wednesday evening.

And - in a late entry to our programme, by popular demand, Ron has kindly offered to lead another "pop up" walk on Friday (daytime), which covers a later (12 mile) section of the Capital Challenge route itself.  All the details are at the bottom of this note, but if you'd like to do a bit more recce-ing of the route, and have got a free day on Friday, just rock up at Golders Green tube station for 11:15 on Friday morning (though get there at 10:30 if you fancy a coffee in Caffe Nero beforehand).

Well - that's enough for now, especially as you are probably still struggling to think clearly having suffered a 60 minute time-warp over the weekend in the interests of making our evenings a bit lighter (a worthwhile sacrifice, though, surely).

Have a great week and don't forget to cheer loudly on Saturday!

Adam
