Sarn Helen

Carms, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd
Sarn Helen is the name of this Roman route through West Wales, connecting various Roman remains. In places the old road is clearly visible, but in others it is a matter of conjecture. From the Roman fort at Caerhun the route heads along the edge of Snowdonia to the Swallow Falls, Dolwyddelan, skirts Ffestiniog to Trawsfynydd, and continues to Dolgellau and Machynlleth. After crossing the Rheidol valley, the route becomes less wild and more agricultural to Bronant, Lampeter, and Carmarthen, albeit moorland at 1,200 ft is crossed in the Pencader area. Navigational skills would be appropriate on the northern part of the route.
