Suffolk

97 km / 60 miles
The Suffolk Coast Path (formerly called the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Path) follows rights of way and permissive paths along the Suffolk Heritage Coast south from Lowestoft on low cliffs, foreshore, heath, marsh, river and sea walls. Some inland diversions are necessary because of coastal erosion. Southwold, with its pier, lighthouse and beach huts, is visited; the power staion at Sizewell is passed; the Sandlings Walk is joined near Snape Maltings, home of the Aldeburgh Festival; the seasonal foot ferry is used from Bawdsey to cross the River Deben (daily service between May & September: for information call 07709 411 511); the path ends at Landguard Fort, Felixstowe.

At Felixstowe a link route, described in the Cicerone guide, connects to the Stour and Orwell Walk.

The Cicerone guide also describes an alternative Orford loop that explores the River Alde and gives an option of using the seasonal Butley ferry to rejoin the main route.

The Sandlings Walk intersects with the Coast Path in several places to enable shorter, circular walks to be devised.

The 2015 book by Peter Caton, 'Suffolk Coast Walk' explores all 162 miles of Suffolk's unique coastline and provides useful background to the area.
