This is a book for dipping into rather than reading from cover to cover! Whatever it is that brings you to the canal we hope you find something of interest in one or more sections of the book. The guide covers the Lancaster Canal from Preston to Kendal, including the Ribble Link and the branch to Glasson Dock and the narrative is written as if making a journey from south to north. Follow the accompanying maps from the bottom of each page and work up. This fifth edition started life as a mere reprint, with perhaps one or two minor corrections and changes. However, it soon became evident that in the four years since the last edition all sorts of changes have occurred, particularly in the business enterprises featured on the map pages. Some have succumbed to the tough economic times and closed down, some have changed their name or other details and indeed some new ones have been born.
