Sussex Coastline Walk

222 km / 138 miles

E Sussex, W Sussex
From Emsworth in Hampshire with its surface transport links, the route proper starts in Sussex on the eastern side of the indented Chichester Harbour, with its geological origins in the last Ice Age and now a major centre for sailing activities, circuiting Thorney Island to the attractive villages of Prinsted and Bosham, onwards to Dell Quay, West Itchenor and the Witterings, rounding Selsey Bill to Pagham Harbour and then along the developed coastal towns of Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthing, and Shoreham to reach the city of Brighton and Hove.

Now rising on low cliffs at Peacehaven, Newhaven port is then passed to reach Seaford. East of here are the famous Seven Sisters chalk cliffs providing spectacular elevated cliff-top walking to Eastbourne, after which the coast is again developed through Bexhill to Hastings.

East of Hastings the hills and cliffs rise again and there is a varied section in the Hastings Country Park with its wooded glens, hills of heather, and then of golden gorse on the Firehills, with some very ancient sandstone cliffs.

Finally the flat Pett Level leads to Winchelsea Beach and the possibility of short inland excursions to the historic, interesting and attractive small towns of Winchelsea and Rye, with the Sussex coast section ending after Camber and Broomhill sands east of Jury's Gap.

Apart from the cliff sections, much of the walking is relatively flat and there are many good public transport links. The many estuarine and mudflat areas in the western sections abound in birdlife. Care should be taken to check the tides on the low-lying parts of the route.

Major sections of this coast are developed for seaside recreation and accommodation and there is much in the way of industrial infrastructure and key continental transport links on view.
