Surrey Hills Challenge Walk

29 km / 18 miles

Surrey
This is John Merrill's favourite walk in the Surrey Hills, with views to the North Downs ridge and a vigorous challenge as a day walk. The route heads to Wotton village to ascend via Coldharbour, the highest village in southern England, to Leith Hill and its tower, at just over 1000ft (305m) the highest point in the south east. Continuing through Holmbury St Mary, the tops of Holmbury and Pitch Hills are reached, then on past Ewhurst Windmill, the route crosses the Scots Pine woodland of Winterfold Wood to the attractive village of Shere. The final section returns through Gomshall to Abinger Hammer (tearoom). Gomshall station is a short walk from the start (infrequent trains). Pitch Hill is the site of a toposcope remembering the Founders of the LDWA.
