White arrow with Shakespeare's head and river symbol on green disc with nameShakespeare's Avon Way

Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

148 km / 92 miles
Shakespeare's Avon Way Association, who are behind the Macmillan Ways and Shakespeare’s Way, have another long distance path – Shakespeare’s Avon Way - which follows the course of the River Avon as closely as possible using existing public footpaths, bridleways and a few minor roads, from its source at Naseby to its confluence with the Severn at Tewkesbury. The main towns it passes through are Warwick, Stratford upon Avon and Evesham. Naseby, Tewkesbury and Evesham were the sites of decisive battles. Tewkesbury, Pershore and Evesham have historic abbeys and Warwick and Kenilworth castles. Bredon Hill, visible from the later stages of the path, is visited by a detour.

There is a website that includes an illustrated diary recording Jenny Davidson’s initial survey walks and a magazine feature, and shows the ups and downs of developing a new long distance path, and it includes an update sheet with route changes and an outline map. A guidebook is available, with proceeds to a hospice group (Myton). The route is now fully waymarked and is planned to be shown on OS mapping.

The guide book details a 3.5 mile extension from Great Comberton to Banbury Stone and The Tower/Parsons Folly, and an extension to the confluence of the Avon with the Severn to Tewkesbury Abbey adding a further mile to the route.

The 'Walking with William Shakespeare' book below provides shorter walks linked with extracts from Shakespeare's works, and covers Warwickshire and London. The River Avon book covers the river not the path.
