The route crosses the North York Moors to the old Nordic settlement of Whitby. Following a mixture of field paths, bridleways and paved packhorse ways, the Saunter passes through farmland, open moors and wooded valleys, with 5500ft of ascent. Most of the route is easy to follow, but in poor weather conditions navigational skills are appropriate. Original route designed and described by Steven Watkins.
