N Yorkshire, Northumberland

2000 km / 1243 miles
This European funded project North Sea Trail, NORTRAIL, aims to provide a trail around the North Sea coastline of the countries that border it and regenerate a network of landscapes and pathways, linking footpaths and sites in recreational areas of the coastal counties encompassing the North Sea. When fully complete the trail will pass through Norway, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, England and Scotland, making a total distance of just under 5,000km.

So far 26 regions, in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England and Scotland, are involved in the initiative. Partners are at different stages of development. A large group of partners are in the process of planning, others have the network of trails and pathways there already. A few are in between, having some pathways ready, but planning others.

In the UK, six existing paths form sections of the North Sea Trail but do not yet provide an unbroken walk. Furthest north is the Moray Firth Trail running into the Aberdeenshire coast walk, the Fife coastal path and the coast of East Lothian. In England the Northumberland Coastal Path and the coastal section of the Cleveland Way National Trail in North Yorkshire complete the picture: in the North York Moors National Park it follows the coastal Cleveland Way National Trail for 80km from Saltburn to Filey. The well established Moray Coast Trail – some 50 miles between Forres/Findhorn and Cullen on the south shore of the Firth - is the first section of the Moray Firth Trail to be designated as part of the North Sea Trail.

Some of these new sections have opened. In Northumberland the Northumberland Coast Path is open, from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed, while in East Lothian the John Muir Way is signed.
