North Dorset Trailway

Dorset

19 km / 12 miles
This walking, cycling and horse riding route runs along part of the route of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway line and takes you through some picturesque villages of the Blackmore vale. The old railway line closed to rail traffic in 1966 and provides an ideal route for a Trailway as it links many of North Dorset's towns and villages.

The longest section provides a continuous route between Blandford and Sturminster Newton - a distance of 9 miles - which takes you through some of North Dorset's spectacular countryside, towns and villages with views of Hambledon Hill and the meandering River Stour. An additional section is open between Blandford St Mary and Spetisbury, that is included on the mapping and GPX below. This takes the length to about 12.5 miles.

The intention is to add sections to Stalbridge with the aim to provide public access along the whole length of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway line. Please do not trespass on sections not currently open to the public.

The trail runs along a flat, surfaced three metre wide track suitable for pushchairs, mobility vehicles, horses, bicycles and walkers.

The North Dorset Trailway website below has useful updates on the development of the route with a downloadable leaflet with an outline map.
