Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire
The Chiltern Society has launched a 67km/42 mile circular footpath in the north Chilterns in the countryside between Luton and Hitchin, building on the success of the Chiltern Way – the popular long distance walking route around the Chilterns, which was established by the Chiltern Society in 2000. The North Chiltern Trail is designed to encourage people to explore this lovely area on foot by combining mainly existing routes - the original and extended routes of the Chiltern Way footpath in the North Chilterns - through some of the most delightful Chiltern countryside of Bedfordshire and north Hertfordshire, including parts of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To celebrate the launch, an outdoor activity festival in September 2014 offered opportunities to walk the whole Trail, plus map reading courses, cycle rides and horse-riding.

Starting at Lilley, the newly designated North Chiltern Trail takes in the Warden and Galley Hills, Pegsdon Hill and nature reserve, Great Offley, Preston, St Paul’s Walden, Whitwell, Peter’s Green and Breachwood Green, with extensive views and outstanding landscapes, plenty of wildlife and some intriguing industrial and agricultural archaeology. A fine range of country pubs is available – with 21 opportunities either on or near the Trail to take refreshment – many more if you include tea shops! The route essentially follows parts of the original Chiltern Way and almost all of the Chiltern Way Northern Extension (dating from 2003), with a short new route addition to Barton-le-Clay.

The Trail can be divided into 9 sections making it ideal to walk over a series of days and a walking book about the North Chiltern Trail was produced for the launch in September 2014 and is available - listed below. The Chiltern Society website carries basic route information and oulline map along with a downloadable trackfile and carried the launch leaflet with details of the launch festival walks and events that took place in September 2014.
