Mawddach Round

43 km / 27 miles

Gwynedd
The round starts at Penmaenpool Bridge on the Mawddach Estuary and ascends the lower slopes of Cadair Idris via Gweman Lake before climbing the summit via the Foxes Path. It then transverses the Cadair ridge before descending to the iconic Barmouth Bridge. The route then follows the northern side of the estuary over the grassy slopes of Llanlech and onto the summit of Diffwys. The return to the start is via a steep descent into Cwn Mynach.

This is a very demanding route with over 7000ft of ascent. It should not be undertaken without good navigational skills. It should not be confused with other routes in the same area.

A limited downloadable route guide is available from the link below.

The route is based on that of David Pritchard, a keen fell-runner and long-time visitor to the estuary, celebrating his 50th ascent of each mountain ("Why not do the two together?") and very nearly served as a celebration of his own 50th year.

It is David's opinion that clockwise is the best way to tackle the route.
