Lancashire Way - Southern Loop

Lancashire

134 km / 83 miles
This route has been developed over the past 20 years by Neil Harwood. The Southern Loop was the first part of the Lancashire Way to be published in 2016. This is available at www.lancashireway.com. The intention is that the website will provide all the information necessary to undertake the walk with route details, OS maps and a commentary - so no books and completely free of charge.

The aim of the Way is to showcase the scenery, history and people of the county in one walk.

The Southern Loop, begins and ends in Preston and takes in the very best of the scenery in south Lancashire and also features aspects of its historical past. At 81 miles long, it should take about 35 hours walking - so between 4-7 days and hence can be completed in a week. The total ascent is over 7,000 feet and 28 towns and villages are visited.

The route takes in the Ribble Estuary, the Mosses of West Lancashire, stretches of the Leeds Liverpool canal with its fascinating history and finally the West Pennine moors. The highest point is Winter Hill at just under 1,500 feet.
