Derwent Valley Circular Walk

69 km / 43 miles

Derby
This interesting circular walk explores both sides of the Derwent Valley between Derby and Matlock. En route you will pass mills, canals, vantage points offering extensive views, historic houses, industrial housing and many picturesque villages. Part of the route also follows the River Derwent. Shorter walks are also possible by using the railway line that runs through the valley.

The valley is fortunate in having today a popular railway line serving all the key places in the valley's story. This allows a whole variety of walks to be made of different lengths, both short and long; linear and circular, to explore the valley; there are numerous permutations! Between them they explore both sides of the valley. En route you will pass mills, canals, historic houses, considerable industrial housing, and vantage points offering extensive views of the valley. Interwoven are many industrial characters and a whole string of picturesque villages.

Between Matlock and Duffield the terrain is "hilly", but beyond Duffield to Derby it is all level walking by the wide River Derwent. The joy of these walks is not only do you get some exercise and see views, you also come to many places where history was made, adding interest and purpose to the walk.
