Dartmoor's Ancient Boundary Perambulation

Devon

80 km / 50 miles
The Perambulation marks the boundary of the ancient forest of the moor and is one of the oldest walks on Dartmoor. From Rundlestone, the route heads through Great Mis Tor and Yes Tor, King's Oven, Dartmeet and Ryder's Hill. At Eastern White Barrow the Perambulation reaches its most southerly point and returns to Rundlestone via Siward's Cross. There is not a public right of way over the whole route but short deviations enable the walk to be completed. This applies especially to the east of the moor. It will be necessary to check times of military firing when attempting the northern section: the ranges website has a link.

A publication by Roland Ebdon entitled 'Dartmoor's Greatest Long Distance Walk covers the historical background to the knights' 'perambulations' with maps covering sixteen walks, to retrace part of this Royal heritage while exploring historic Dartmoor. This is a coffee table book and not a guide to the walk of this name described by Ian and Caroline Kirkpatrick.
