Clough Walk

Derbyshire, Durham, N Yorkshire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, S Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, W Yorkshire

367 km / 228 miles
The Clough Walk is a beautiful, exhilarating long distance walk that passes through the towns and cities associated with the illustrious career of Brian Clough both as a player and manager. Even people who profess to have no interest in football will have heard of Brian Clough but they may not be aware of his love for walking as an escape from the frenetic world of football management. The walk begins in Nottingham and ends on the impressive North East coast on Roker Beach, Sunderland and affords the walker the opportunity to visit football grounds and various memorial sites and statues along the way.

Best known as a manager, Clough won the Football League First Division title twice with different clubs, with Derby County in 1971-72 and then with Nottingham Forest in 1977-78. With Forest he won the European Cup twice in 1978-79 and 1979-80. He won numerous other honours with Forest including the League Cup four times, a Charity Shield, a European Super Cup and was named Manager of the Year in 1977-78. He had a successful playing career as a prolific goalscorer, mainly for his home town club Middlesbrough scoring 204 goals in 222 league matches including 40 or more goals in four consecutive seasons and he later moved to play for Sunderland where his playing career ended after an injury. He had the highest goals per game record of any player that has scored over 200 goals.in the English Leagues. Clough played twice for England.

The walk is described by Martin Perry and Geoff Smith in the book below.

Martin Perry hails from Cheshire and Geoff Smith from Nottingham. In his teenage years Martin lived in Sunderland and became a lifelong fan of Sunderland AFC while Geoff has always been a Nottingham Forest devotee. Martin moved to Nottingham in 1967 and in 1971 met Geoff at the beginning of a 44 year friendship during which they both enjoyed long and successful teaching careers. In the late 1970s and early 80s they both witnessed the amazing success of Forest under the stewardship of Brian Clough. In the 1990s both aspired to Deputy Headships and during this time Martin met Brian Clough when he invited him to preside over his school 's annual award ceremony. On entering their fifties both became avid long distance walkers and completed together most of the well known walking trails.
