The 12-mile waymarked Bede's Way commemorates the Venerable Bede, early medieval Europe's greatest scholar who lived here around 700AD, first following the Don out of Jarrow to Boldon, finishing along the coast south of Whitburn to link the twin Anglo-Saxon monasteries of St Paul's in Jarrow and St Peter's at Wearmouth.
