The Lecale Way starts from the St Patrick Centre in Downpatrick, close to Down Cathedral where the saint is buried. The route is mostly on minor road to reach Audley's Castle and the Castle Ward Estate on the shores of Strangford Lough. The next section takes in Kilclief Castle, an impressive tower house, and the dramatic natural scenery along the Ballyhornan Coastal Path. The path continues through the abandoned settlement of Sheepland to St Patrick's Well. Note that in October the section between Ballyhornan and St Patrick's Well may be closed for conservation reasons.

A stretch of road walking leads through the coastal village of Ardglass, further road walking is punctuated by the Killough Coastal Path and St John's Point lighthouse. The road is eventually left for the Dundrum Coastal Path, which follows the line of a dismantled railway along the shore of Dundrum Inner Bay.

After the village of Dundrum a boardwalk path leads through the Murlough nature reserve, with its extensive dunes, to the beach at Newcastle with views of the Mourne mountains across the bay. The path ends at the visitor information centre in Newcastle. This point also marks the start of the Mourne Way and the Newcastle Way.
