Haematite Trail

Cumbria

The Trail was devised to explore some of the remains of the iron mining industry which brought about the industrial expansion of Furness and the subsequent emergence of Barrow. In its heyday the Furness mining industry was an equivalent to the American Gold Rush and provided some of the richest iron ore worked in Britain. The route passes Newton, Little Urswick, Lindal, Marton and Askam.
