Well done Tony, another true and valid report. The Cleveland group must be gutted that the walk did not take place, it is not an easy task to organise an event especially a walk like the Tandem, the miles you put in checking route, checkpoint locations and visiting landowners etc must be appreciated.A great deal of cost, effort and time is used up, and i hope that members who entered the walk would take this into consideration before they think about applying for a refund. We need to support the Cleveland group to ensure that great events like the Tandem can continue and grow in the future

Commiserations to Cleveland Group – there can be little harder than having to cancel an Event on the start line. Three inches of overnight snow in Filey and Scarborough discovered on rising at 05.00 was an ominous sign and made for an eventful journey through to the Goathland HQ. Although the Village Hall was full of eager contenders it was patently impossible to access and man checkpoints thus making a safe Event impossible. That the eventual announcement of the decision to abort was greeted with sympathetic applause was a testament to the common sense and goodwill of the assembled multitude.
How ironic then that the day turned out to be one in a thousand. Most were determined to salvage something from the wreckage and my company attacked the East route. The morning was magical with two inches of soft fresh snow masking the mud making for easy going in a winter wonderland under a cloudless sky with scarcely a breath of wind. Although the mud reappeared in the afternoon with the thaw it was a diamond day long to be remembered.
And then there was the all day breakfast in the Goathland tea room – thank you, Kate! Also thanks to Eva and her team for facilitating such a fantastic day!
