Two of our children spent summers in BUNAC camps. It was cheap but I don't think they would have described it as a holiday. It was a great experience for them and they made life long friendships there - not to mention meeting their future husband/wife!
One word of warning - avoid the "rich kids" camps at all costs - they treat the counsellors as the servants they are no doubt used to having back home. Our children had their best experience with the inner city kids from Philadelphia.

There is a slight catch.

BUNAC is a not-for-profit worldwide working adventures company specialising in the recruitment of dedicated instructors for Summer Camps in the USA. For 2009, we are really looking for Outdoor Adventure Instructors. It allows people can travel to America and work for up to nine weeks in a summer camp environment, teaching children skills in an activity.

As an Outdoor Adventure Camp Counsellor, participants would lead or assist hikes in the mountains, overnight camping trips and campfires with up to twenty children aged between 6-16 years old for nine weeks at a Summer Camp.

Working at camp is a great opportunity for hiking enthusiasts to develop coaching and professional skills transferable to many professions.BUNAC have been operating Summer Camp programmes for over thirty years, and run a personal placement service- which means that applicants are placed to work at camps we know they would succeed at- based on their personality, qualifications and experience.

The cost associated to travel to camp with BUNAC is only £287, which includes return flights, insurance, placement and support and also food & accommodation at camp. Participants are guaranteed a salary of $985 or $1215 (if over 21) at the end of the summer, and most people put this towards post-camp travel for up to six weeks.

People can apply online at www.bunac.org.uk to begin the process. To be eligible, participants must be 18+ (by 1st June 2009) and have child care experience and experience in their activity.

Because of this more recent need for mountaineering applicants, I was wondering if you would mind circulating this information to your members? If possible, I would love an opportunity to discuss any opportunities to further develop options to pioneering enthusiasts.
