Having the FTT on the same day as two other regional events is bound to have an effect on numbers, but when that day also happens to contain an England World Cup match in the afternoon, that can only be the hardest of luck. Still, a few dozen set off from Dolphinholme into the early morning warmth to complete a 20.4 mile circuit with 2381 ft ascent. A strongish wind brought relief from the sun and the wonderful route kept spirits up and an early pace going. The long climb to Clougha Pike took its toll as the sun started to sap away energy and the final seven miles were very hot indeed. Checkpoints had simple refreshments, but very welcome. The route description found us scratching our heads a bit, but this was compensated for by excellent Tracklogs print-outs provided which showed the route, statistics and the gradient profile. Good food at the end and a calm atmosphere helped to create an event that had a lot less of the cut & thrust of bigger events. Helen duly completed her first 20+ mile event. Thanks to everyone for a memorable day.
