Hello everyone,
I'll start this update with the news that, following our AGM, we now have a new Chair, Gill Struthers and a new Walks Secretary, Lizzie Bridge. Gill can be contacted at essexandherts.chair@ldwa.org.uk, and Lizzie at essexandherts.walks@ldwa.org.uk New faces are always welcome on the Committee, so let Gill know if you are interested in joining us as we can co-opt new members at any time.
Social Walks
Lizzie has wasted no time in her new role, and would love to hear from anyone planning a social walk. To make things easier for you, Lizzie has produced a list of Available Walk Dates 2022 so you can see at a glance what dates are still available. Lizzie has also drawn up a template to help you supply her with the relevant details of your walk: Social Walk Information
Our next few social walks are listed below. More details and leaders' contact details are in the Future Walks List on our website.
Sunday 20th February - Saling past Tollesbury: 16.5 miles from Dunmow across fields to Great Bardfield, via Lindsell and Oxen End and returning via by-ways and footpaths through Stebbing. Leader: Brian Martin
Sunday 27th February - All Creatures Great and Small & Here be Dragons: London walk, now fully booked
Sunday 6th March: ' boats came in time past ...' 18 miles from Radwinter. In 1587 William Harrison recorded in his book 'The Description of England' that in the Middle Ages corn was transported from the village of Radwinter to Beeleigh Abbey by water via the Rivers Pant and Blackwater. This information was taken from the introduction in Helen Walker's fascinating new booklet 'Radwinter to Beeleigh Abbey - A long-distance walk following a medieval route-way through the heart of Essex'. We will be following the first section of Helen's route to Great Bardfield Watermill, then returning above the Pant Valley. Leader Peter Tremain. Peter will have copies of the booklet for sale for £5
Sunday 13th March: Essex Walker Marshals' walk: more details will be sent to marshals shortly
We also have walks arranged for Sunday 20th March (Georgie) and Sunday 27th March (Ian) - there will be more about these in the next email update.
Challenge Events
Entries are now open for the 10th Essex Walker on Sunday 10th April. There are two routes to choose from - 26.4 miles or a shorter route at 17.5 miles - ideal for anyone new to long distance walking.
On Sunday 26th June we will be running the Hertfordshire Hobble from Buntingford. If you are able to help on this event, please get in touch with Georgie Hogg (georgiehogg@btinternet.com) There will be a marshals' walk on Sunday 22nd May.
Three Forests Way: originally planned for 2020, then 2021 we will finally be running the Three Forests Way, one of our 50 mile flagship events, over the weekend of 17-18th September. This is a 24 hour event and we need lots of support before, during and after the event. Please let me know if you are able to help (essexandherts@ldwa.org.uk)
The next update is due in a couple of weeks - let me know if you would like me to include anything in it. Meanwhile enjoy the signs of Spring on your walks - and don't forget your I Spy 50 for 50.
Best wishes,
Jackie
