From Crickhowell School, Youth & Community Centre, New Road, NP18 1AW. 1) The Standard route - 26 miles / 42 Km with cold refreshments on route. 2) The Endurance option 30 miles / 49Km with cold refreshments on route. 3) The Ridge route 19 miles / 30Km keeps high level hence no refreshments on route The Black Dragon Challenge Walk takes the high road from Crickhowell. Passing Llanbedr, you climb Crug Mawr before following the long whale-back ridge – so very characteristic of the Black Mountains – to reach Waun Fach, the highest point in the range. From here, it is downhill to Pengenfford, with cold drinks when you arrive. Mynydd Troed is a climb of 1,000 ft, followed by Mynydd Llangorse, and then you drop again to lower altitudes and more welcome cold drinks at Pentre. By now you’ve done 20 miles and you’re about to hit the wall – 1,800 ft of it – before you top Pen Allt-Mawr. After that you can breeze along the ridge to Pen Cerrig-Calch, and finally it’s down, down all the way back to Crickhowell for well-earned drinks and refreshments. The Endurance Leg, for those who want an extra challenge, follows the standard route up to Crug Mawr then descends from the ridge to Grwyne Fawr Reservoir before climbing back onto the same ridge north of Waun Fach descending to the Pengenfford for refreshments. The remainder of the route is the same as the Standard Route. The Ridge Route avoids some of the ascent in the longer routes. Upon reaching Waun Fach it continues along the ridge to Pen Allt-Mawr to re-join the Standard route for the final ridge and descent to Crickhowell
General Notes
Those not reaching Pentre checkpoint on standard and endurance routes by 16:00 will be asked to retire. There are no further time constraints after that, but participants deemed by the sweep team to be incapable of finishing the route will be withdrawn and given transport back to Crickhowell. Full kit check at start and randomly en-route. All entrants to be over 18 on day of event. NO DOGS ALLOWED due to lambing season
