Newsletter - July 2018

I hope you're all enjoying this wonderful spell of warm weather, and not suffering too much from World Cup fever. Mel and I had high hopes of witnessing Iceland's victory parade through the streets Reykjavik, but that's looking increasingly unlikely. We'll just have to follow England instead!

Guy Vowles has had to cancel his evening walk on Thursday 28th June. Apparently it has nothing to do with the match that evening!

In this month's newsletter:

  • Walk leaders needed;
  • 25th Anniversary ceilidh;
  • Remembering Mark Rendall;
  • A Wiltshire 50 - The Deverill's Rings;
  • Walking trivia;
  • The Hadrian Hundred 2019;
  • Wiltshire trivia;
  • Pewsey Downsaround (PDA) certificate;
  • Badges for sale; and
  • This month's walks in and around the county.

Walk Leaders Needed

From Andy Todd:

"I still have no one to lead the walk on Thursday 15th November. Looking into 2019, walk leaders are still needed for:

  • Sunday 31st March 2019 (Fifth Sunday of the month);
  • Sunday 21st April 2019; and
  • Thursday 21st March 2019

I already have some volunteers for May 2019 onwards, and am more than happy to have more volunteers for specific dates.

If you attend group walk then please think about contributing something back into the group by leading a walk. I and others will always be happy to give advice/support.

To volunteer email me at andy@andytodd.org.uk."

25th Anniversary Ceilidh

From Lesley Bellis:

"The arrangements for our 25th Anniversary ceilidh are as follows:

  •  Date and Time: 7th September 2018 at 7pm
  •  Venue: Selwyn Hall, Box, SN13 8NT
  •  Cost: £10

We have a ceilidh band and caller booked and tickets can be purchased shortly via a link on our web page. Please bring what you would like to drink and a dish to share and of course yourselves, partners and friends, as we want this to be a wonderful celebration of 25 years of walking. Please let me know whether you will be bringing a sweet or savoury dish to share. There will be a cake. I suggest you wear light clothes and flat shoes as you will get hot.

Tickets are now available to purchase by clicking HERE."

Remembering Mark Rendall

From Graham Instrell:

"I am pleased to report that I have made some progress. I've been in touch with the landowner who is very happy for us to go ahead with installing a kissing gate near Giant's Grave. The committee will now decide on which of the various options is best suited to the location."

A Wiltshire 50 - The Deverill's Rings

From Andy Todd:

"This 50-mile group walk takes place on the 13th/14th October and is based in the Upper Deverills. The route consists of 3 different, roughly equal rings looping out from and back to the base location, so you can do 1, 2 or 3 rings.

This is an ideal opportunity for people to try a longer walk, or a night walk. This will be a group walk, however if individuals want to go at their own pace then that is not a problem, setting their own start times to match the opening hours of the hall. A .gpx file will be available.

We have booked the hall in the village and will be operating a 'simple' level of catering. There will be a charge to cover the hall and food, and numbers will be limited. For more information and to book a space, please contact me at andy@andytodd.org.uk."

Walking Trivia

Kangaroos, moles and grasshoppers all use their legs other than for walking. Most kangaroos can only move both their back legs together and not one at a time. At speeds of up to 40mph the tail is used for steering and balance whilst hopping. Moles have stubby, broad, shovel-like front feet, which are extremely well adapted for digging. Grasshoppers 'sing' by rubbing their hind legs against their forewings, giving off a sound similar to a stringed instrument.

The Hadrian Hundred 2019

From Lesley Bellis:

"Yes, we are already talking excitedly about next year’s annual LDWA flagship event, The Hadrian Hundred, which is taking place in Northumbria, Cumbria and Teeside. I know I am biased but it is the most beautiful route in arguably the most remote region in England. We have been asked if we would be happy to share a checkpoint with the Kent group as it will be open for a considerable length of time. We will need plenty of volunteers to make it a fun occasion so if anyone is interested please keep the spring bank holiday weekend at the end of May free. More details will be made available at the AGM where we will start collecting the names of interested members."

Wiltshire Trivia

John Hanning Speke (1827-1864), soldier and explorer, died at Neston Park near Corsham as the result of a shooting accident on the nearby Hazelbury Manor estate. Speke was the first European to reach Lake Victoria in East Africa in 1858, identifying it as the source of the River Nile after a second expedition in 1862.

Pewsey Downsaround (PDA) Certificate

The PDA committee invites addressees to submit photographs for use as the background image on next year's certificate. The image should have been taken along one of the four routes ... although it doesn't need to have been taken on the day of the event itself. Please e-mail your photographs to WiltshireLDWA@outlook.com.

Badges For Sale

From Lesley Bellis:

"I have a quantity of LDWA Wiltshire woven patches in my car should anyone wish to buy one whilst out on a walk. They are £1 each."
