Committee Meeting on 11th June 2019

The key points from the recent committee meeting are as follows:

  • Lesley thanked all the group volunteers at the Hadrian Hundred checkpoint for their amazing work that, due to the adverse conditions, went above and beyond what was usually required. The Northumberland group also thanked us;
  • The South Wales group is preparing a wet weather programme should there be similar conditions on the Y 100 Sir Fynwy next year;
  • We had an informative poster display at the recent Corsham Walking Festival, where Clive attended the opening ceremony and reception on behalf of the group;
  • Andy was given the go-ahead to organise the next stage of the Wiltshire 50 Challenge Event to be held in 2020;
  • Richard reported that the group's finances were healthy, with the recent Pewsey Downsaround making a sizeable profit; and
  • The committee agreed to give Adrian the deposit towards his proposed group weekend to Keswick next year.

Y 100 Sir Fynwy

From South Wales LDWA:

"‘Y 100 Sir Fynwy’ or ‘The Monmouthshire 100’ if English is your preferred language, is a route that is loosely based on ‘The Monmouthshire Way’. The county is exceptionally beautiful and very varied with regards to its topography. With the River Wye forming a natural barrier to the east and the River Usk passing through the heart of the ancient county, Sir Fynwy hosts two of Wales’ most beautiful rivers. Sir Fynwy has lofty peaks climbing higher than 2,000 feet above sea level at one end of the county and marshland where the sea laps against the man-made sea wall at the other. In between, Sir Fynwy hosts the ancient forest of Wentwood and rolling farmland with magnificent views that stretch beyond the county boundary.

Sir Fynwy is a county that hosts several historic castles and towns with unique characteristics that are worthy of visiting in their own right. And, having left the Norman town of Chepstow, ‘Y 100 Sir Fynwy’ will visit several of the market towns, the Gwent Levels, both the famous rivers, the Black Mountains, Offa’s Dyke Path and the peacefully wooded Wye Valley prior to returning to Chepstow.

Entrants will be able to enjoy the variety that the county offers on their journey along ‘Y 100 Sir Fynwy’ knowing that on return to Chepstow they will receive the famous South Wales LDWA ‘Hywl’ as they walk through the doors of Chepstow Comprehensive School."

The event takes place from Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th May 2020.

The Wiltshire LDWA is manning the checkpoint at the 91-mile mark, in the Babington Centre in Trelleck from 0900hrs on the Sunday until 0600hrs the following day. Lesley expects there to be two teams. If you are interested in helping out, please let her know. The committee has agreed to fund a meal in the pub opposite for volunteers.

Walk Details Required

From Andy Todd:

"Walk leaders are still needed for many dates in 2020. Please contact me at andy@andytodd.org.uk if you can lead a walk, particularly for the January - April period. You are also reminded that if you have an idea for a walk which will require support from the group to make it happen, to please get in touch."

Wiltshire 50

From Andy Todd:

"We are organising another 50-mile group walk on 12th/13th October 2019, starting in Devizes.

The walk is group walk, so follows normal group walk rules. The full distance is 50 miles, but there is an option of getting as far as the first hall before returning to the start (~23 miles). Lesley has offered to keep us all well fed.

Please contact me at andy@andytodd.org.uk if you are interested in taking part."

The Wiltshire LDWA Payment Site is now accessible via the Wiltshire LDWA web site.

Somerset Space Walk

With the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing approaching, I thought I would draw your attention to the Somerset Space Walk, a sculpture trail model of the solar system, located on the towpath of the 14-mile Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. The model of the Sun and its planets are in their proportionally correct sizes and distances apart, however, unusually for a solar system model, there are two sets of planets.

The model is built to a scale of 1:530,000,000, meaning that one millimetre on the model equates to 530 kilometres. The Sun is sited at Higher Maunsel Lock, and one set of planets is installed in each direction along the canal towards Taunton and Bridgwater; the distance between the Sun and each model of Pluto being nearly 7 miles. For less hardy walkers, the inner planets are within 220 feet of the Sun, and near to the Maunsel Canal Centre (and tea shop) at Lower Maunsel Lock.
