Grassington. Saturday January 20th 2018. Distance - 19 miles. 22 walkers. Leader - Ralph Warman.

The Wharfedale Wander soon became the Wharfedale winter wonderland, as we left the green fields of Grassington for Bordley via Threshfield the fields and moors were soon thick with snow.
The heavy underfoot conditions slowed our pace and made the going tough as we reached the track at Mastiles Lane for morning drinks and snap.
Firmer underfoot conditions allowed for better progress to the Roman Camp, and then the slog up Clapham High Mark, with gates and stiles covered with high walls of drifted pure white snow, to the moor summit of High Lineseed Head and the misty white white white out conditions.
Still in heavy snow we descended to the valley of Littondale and lunched at Hawkswick Cote. Then we headed down the valley to Conistone Bridge, with the fields now showing some peeping green grass, and then returned back into the snow via the Dales Way path back to Grassington.
Our Winter Wharefedale Spectacular was then concluded with a pint or two in the Old Hall In Threshfield.

Embsay. Saturday February 10th 2018. Distance - 17 miles. 18 walkers. Leader - Ian Dyer.

Not much fun today for the eighteen walkers that turned up and braved the horrible conditions of the Embsay Moor circuit. But the show must go on, and it did and we tackled the rain, sleet, snow, ice, wind, mud, mist, and the hills which Ian put in front of us.
No trip to the pub today, all we wanted to do was get back to the warmth and comfort of our homes.
Thanks Ian for keeping it all together, and the rest of the pack for toughing in out, we are a great group but we can't control the weather !

Cliviger. Saturday March 10th 2018. Distance - 22 miles. 7 walkers. Leader - Peter Smith.

Our walk on Saturday went well despite poor conditions, which slowed us down a little. A group of seven set out from the lay-by under the dramatic bulk of Thieveley Scout from the A646 at 8.30am, making our way up onto Black Scout. Following all the way along the top to Dawk Hole Wood and its steep decent down into Pudsey near Portsmouth. Coming down we spotted deer in the heavily lichened wood below. From Pudsey it was up steeply to Shore and on to Hudson Bridge, before reaching Bridestones and our first refreshment stop at 11am in the murky mist.
We joined the Hebden route down to Hippins and into the impressive mixed woodland of Dean Delph, with it’s water catchment in full spate. We continued toward Gauxholme via Dobroyd Castle, coming out at the Bacup Road opposite the very beautiful Gorpley Wood. (South Pennines Hidden Gem.)
Following the lefthand path up to the top of the wood, left onto Inchfield Pasture and over all the way to the Clough Road, taking the stiff climb right up to Trough Edge End. From the trig, we turned east along Limers Gate to Sharneyford and the Bacup Road again. Crossing the road, to make our way steadily up to Heald Moor and eventually, over to Thieveley Pike and then the final steep decent back down into the valley and our transport home around 5.45pm.

Rylstone. Saturday March 17th 2018. Distance - 25 miles. 7 walkers. Leader - Ralph Warman.

Before we arrived at Rylstone we had already debated considerably about the walk and the forecasted heavy snow showers and strong gales. However we decided to do the walk the other way round and started with the climb up on to Barden Fell first, with the option to retreat if necessary.
The path was very icy and the wind was bitterly cold but we kept on moving and walked on over to Bolton Abbey. Our first stop was at the Cavendish Pavillion, no queues today for the cafe in the wintry conditions, a quick sandwich stop as we the continued up the Dales Way to Burnsall.
The weather was unpredictable, one minute snow showers, the next minute the sunshine was out but still the temperature never got above freezing. On reaching Burnsall and sheltering under the lea of the Red Lion pub we considered a 6 mile walk back to Rylstone or to carry on with planned route, which was a further 9 miles. We opted for the latter and were rewarded with a spectacular display of water at the weir near Litton, the water was crashing down.
We headed on to Cracoe before finally reaching the snow covered cars at Rylstone. A quick change of shoes, heater on full blast and off to the Devonshire Arms for a drink and a sit down in front of a log burner, perfect end to a challenging yet rewarding day out.
Thanks to Ralph for leading the walk (on Jane's behalf) and maintaining an excellent pace, which meant we were back just before 5pm and time enough for a drink and safe journey home before the serious snow came along.

Ingleton. Saturday April 7th 2018. Distance - 20 miles. 17 walkers and one dog. Leader - Karen Pickersgill.

We set off from Ingleton in the rain and, with the exception of the last few miles, it unfortunately stayed with us throughout.
The climb up to the summit of Ingleborough was tough in the rain, but rewarded by great views, and, following the steep descent into Chapel-le Dale, St Leanord’s Church provided welcome shelter for a late refreshment stop. At this point our group Chairman and Secretary (for very valid reasons - not linked to the weather!) made their way back to Ingleton via the Old Roman Road, whilst the remaining 15 walkers continued across Scales Moor - skirting round Twisleton Scar - to reach the head of Ingleton Falls.
At this point the group were given the choice of returning to Ingleton (we were all soaked!) or continuing into Kingsdale. We’re made of stern stuff and all opted to continue! Yordas cave provided more welcome shelter for a late lunch and a brief explore - before setting off on the final part of the route back into Ingleton via Turbary Road (taking in all the amazing pot holes up there) and Tow Scar Road.
The Three Horse Shoes Pub provided us with a further opportunity to dry out and partake in some liquid refreshment. A tough day but enjoyable!

Otley. Saturday April 21st 2018. Distance - 29 miles. 32 walkers. Leader - Ralph Warman.

At last a dry warm sunny day for the large gathering setting off from the Surprise View on the Chevin, numbers swelled by walkers from other groups wanting a tough day out and a extra few miles in preparation for the LDWA flagship 100 event being held in Kent at the end of May.
The circuit connecting the communities of Otley, Burley in Wharfedale and Baildon offered us good support with walkers talking on extra food and drinks at shops, pubs and cafes on route, and a welcome ice cream stop on Shipley Glen.
The walk was completed in 10 hours 40 minutes, we then had a welcome pint in the Royalty pub to finish off a great day.
Many thanks to all who turned up for their continued support and to Brummie Dave and Julia for their back marking marshalling.

Bretton Common. Saturday June 30th 2018. Distance - 19 miles. 11 walkers. Leader - Pete Beddows

Wall to wall sunshine again today as we left Bretton Common on the Horbury Hike Variant. A glimpse at some of the sculptures on display as we walked through Bretton Park on our way to High Hoyland and then it was on to Skelmanthorpe and our first drinks stop at the local shop.
We then headed onto Emley for lunch further drinks and ice cream, by now the conditions were sweltering but very enjoyable. The route then headed back via Flockton Green and Stony Cliffe woods.
Well done Pete ! An enjoyable walk of a different kind.

Ingleton. Saturday August 4th 2018. Distance - 29 miles. 13 walkers. Leader - Jane Parry.

This was always going to be a toughy, the first climb of the day Ingleborough and the last climb of the day Whernside over a 29 mile circuit.
The group of 13 were up for the challenge as we left Ingleton in brilliant sunshine and very hot conditions for the climb up Ingleborough, then it was onto Simon Fell and Park Fell then dropping down to Ribblehead for the first refuelling stop of the day.
Over the top to Dent via the Craven Way track for lunch in the village, then the long track back to Kingsdale and the final ascent of the day up to the summit of Whernside via White Shaw Moss.
Snacks and drinks were had on the summit then the long track back above Twisleton Scars finally dropping back into Ingleton on Oddies lane.
Well done Jane for a great day out.

Spofforth. Saturday November 10th 2018. Distance - 18 miles. 26 walkers. Leader - Karen Pickersgill.

Twenty six people, and one dog, joined us on this moderate, but fast paced, walk which visited a number of small villages and hamlets around the outskirts of Wetherby.
The weather was bright and sunny throughout - with the exception of the last 20 minutes when the heavens opened (could have been worse). We arrived back in Spofforth with time to explore the castle ruins and visit The Castle Inn for a few drinks.
Thank you to Bob Clarke for putting the walk together and to Ralph Warman and Vera Ostojic for reccying the walk with me.
