AMBLESIDE, HAWKSHEAD, SKELGHYLL WOODS & TROUTBECK

Walk Leader: Mark

Number on the walk: 6

Distance: 15 miles

Weather: Heavy rain

The weather forecast was spot on: rain then heavy rain. Actually, it wasn't too bad when we set off climbing up out of Troutbeck towards the summit of Wansfell Pike. We could actually see Windermere, but we could also see the thick cloud heading in our direction in the distance. By the time we reached the summit the wind had become quite strong bringing with it the first real rain of the day which stayed with us all day steadily getting heavier. We quickly dropped down off the summit heading for Ambleside. From here we made our way around Windermere on good paths to Wray Castle and then on to the ferry terminal. Once on the ferry we were at last in shelter, so we used these valuable 10 minutes to have a hot drink and quickly eat some food. It was then on to Bowness where we jumped on a waiting bus which we took to the Ambleside Road / Patterdale Road roundabout. We walked from here along the A592 back to our cars at Church Bridge. This was certainly a waterproof testing day!
