We left Arnside to walk southwest along the sandy beach of the Kent Channel before entering the Nature Reserve of Grubbins Wood, across to the hamlet of New Barns then through the woods of Arnside Park to the pretty village of Far Arnside. Our next objective was the 159 metres (522 ft) Fell of Arnside Knott where the morning ‘Brew Stop’ was duly taken whilst also drinking in the fabulous views across the sands of Morecambe Bay to Grange Over Sands and beyond.

Descending from the fell our walk crossed Arnside Moss passing the 15th century Pele Towers of Arnside and Hazelslack. We left to ascend Whinscar via the infamous Fairy Steps. Legend has it that that if you make it to the top without touching the sides, the fairies will grant you one wish. Wishes duly made, our route continued descending into Dallam Park home of a famous herd of fallow deer (noticeable by their absence on this occasion) and of course the magnificent Georgian Mansion of Dallam Tower.

Our route back to Arnside continued through the delightful villages of Storth and Sandside the latter situated on the River Kent estuary. Our final leg of the journey was made easier by utilising the embankment of the long since disused Hincaster Branch of the Furness Railway.
