Malham, Nov 20th

Leaders:              Glyn and Julie

No on walk:          13 + 1 dog

Distance:             15 miles

Weather:            Sunny but very windy later becoming very wet and windy

Thirteen walkers and one the dog set off from Malham National Park Centre on a cold and fine but rain threatening in the distance morning. Our route followed the path of the River Aire, where we passed a mill converted into holiday lets. Crossing the river at Kirby Malham we followed the Peninne Way to Airton, turning east to Calton where we passed the stone circle.

The group then continued the two mile ascent to Weets Top, stopping for a morning break half way up the steady ascent. After summitting and descending Weets to Gordale Scar, we split into two teams with the majority of walkers determined to climb the waterfall whilst the other team took the alternative route up Grey Gill. At this point two of the group had to get back to their car so down to 11 and one dog. We were surprised to find John and Greg at the bottom of the waterfall as due to road closure they were late to the walk. As they had walked some distance they opted to walk back to Malham via the cove.  After a slippery climb for the waterfall group we all met up again at the top to continue to Malham Tarn.

Lunch was taken in a warm and dry Orchid House and then we headed to the Tarn Moss boardwalk then on to High Tren House following the path to Dean Moor.

Crossing Dean Moor to the spelting chimney the heavens opened and it was a tough mile exposed to the elements. Following the Dales Highway route  we joined the main (slippery) path to Malham Cove. We then descending the steps back to Malham arriving back at the cars for 3.30pm.

Thanks to all who joined us and to Doreen for taking the photos.
