Cartmel, Sept 29th

Walk Leader:           Peter Lathom

Number on walk:     10

Distance:                18 miles

Weather:                Lovely autumn weather

We left the car park in Cartmel along the Cistercian Way before turning to pick up a section of the Cumbria Coastal footpath. The views over the coast were quite spectacular with The Hoad monument at Ulverston in thedistance. Continuing uphill we reached our first top of the day, Howbarrow, and then headed north through undulating countryside to arrive at the popular Bigland Tarn. We had a coffee stop, albeit it a bit later than usual, on the top of Bigland Barrow, a Wainwright Outlying Fell.

Retracing our steps to the road, we turned left and followed roads until we came to Four Lane Ends and shortly afterwards took the bridleway to began the ascent of Hampsfell. Reaching the Hospice on the summit we stopped for lunch again with panoramic views all around.

Leaving Hampsfell behind we descended Fell End to the road and after crossing some fields into Allithwaite took the Boarbank road dropping down to the village of Cark. From here we took the Cistercian Way which led us back into Cartmel arriving at 3.45pm.
