Spring Wood, Aug 21st

Walk Leaders:    Doreen & Gareth

No on walk:        29

Distance:            10 miles

Weather:             Overcast but warm in the morning with the sun putting an appearance in later after lunch

The walk started with a climb from Spring Wood up Clerk Hill before turning along the road to Wiswell Moor Houses. Here we left the road and descended through fields to reach the village of Sabden, known, some say, for its treacle mines. From here we had a steady ascent up the slopes of Pendle Hill eventually arriving at the main track which, if we turned right, would lead to the summit itself. However, our route turned left and dropped down to meet the road at the Pendle ski club. After a short walk along this road we took a sometimes poorly defined path crossing a footbridge opposite Howcroft Barn  and continuing to the next ruined farmhouse where we stopped for our lunch.

Lunch over, we descended towards Mearley Hall where we turned left and followed the road towards the outskirts of Pendleton and continued along Pendleton Road to the lane leading to Parker Place farm. Here we met up with Janice and Maria, former members of the club, and after chatting with them we carried on passing the farm and starting the more gradual climb leading up Wiswell Moor. When we had all arrived at the top we began the final part of our walk which was an easy track down to Bramley Farm finally retracing our outward route back to Clerk Hill and down to our cars.
