Eccleston,July 17th

Walk Leader:    Kate Motley

No on walk:      20

Distance:          10.5 miles

Weather:         Overcast but warm

The weather was a bit cooler than of late as we left Parr Hall Farm on a mystery tour round Eccleston before continuing through fields to Church Lane and Toogood Farm which is now selling, amongst other foods, fresh baked bread which could be quite tempting on another occasion. From there we made our way almost to the top of Harrock Hill but not quite yet as Kate put in a detour taking us away but with good views especially to the east looking across to the West Pennine Moors. After following a concessionary path we turned right for the climb which this time did take us to the derelict windmill at the top of Harrock Hill and our lunch stop for the day. Tom and Ade enjoyed themselves on the swings whilst the rest of us watched hoping the ropes wouldn't break.

Leaving after lunch we descended Sandersons Lane and made our way to Eccleston Delph, an old water-filled quarry which is now used for diving and open water swimming but it has past history when in 1979 a handless corpse was found in the lake by some divers. Some say it had connections with the killing at the 'murder house' at Withnell. However, today there is a good cafe and an attractive walk round the lake. After enjoying this unexpected stop we made our way back to the cars passing Heskin Old Hall and arriving back about 2.40pm.
