Stan’s Arnside Walk – 28/12/2017

Walk Leader John Evenden

No on Walk: 16 + 2 dogs

Distance 14.5 miles

The day was cold after a hard frost overnight but sunshine was predicted for a good dry day. Sixteen hardy souls and two dogs assembled on Arnside front for a slightly late start. The route had been set by Stan and was a variation of a number of his walks.  Setting off around the shore via Blackstone Point, Arnside Point, the Park Point and passing through the caravan park to far Arnside. A Christmas tree there had been made from flopsum and driftwood. We then climbed Heathwaite for some splendid views, then on to Arnside View point for a break. The surrounding hills all snow-capped looked magnificent. After visiting the trig point it was through Arnside Knot Woods and Hare Parrock to Arnside Tower and Middlebarrow Woods where a left junction was missed by the front runners. We regrouped for dinner which was taken on a sunny bank by Hazelslack Tower.

The hard frost had made the going much better; however some sections presented a challenge. Cutting through Longtail Wood and Haverbrack and dropping to cross the Deer Park to Beetham. Passing the cemetery we made our way up Whinscar to the Fairy steps then across Beetham fell, crossing the route before dropping to Storth and the beach path. From here the finish still looked a long way off but the track was good. At the station I rang SB/SB only to find the advance party had already arrived. Most caught up in the Albion for a chat and a drink. It was great to see Stan out on one of his better days.
