Distance:              17.2 miles

Weather:               Very wintry with some heavy snow showers

Looking out of the window early on this snowy Saturday morning with snow coming down and the road looking a bit risky, it was doubtful if anyone would turn up for this extra walk from Whins Lane , Wheelton.  However seven hardy souls arrived and we set off along the canal towards Hoghton. Pretty soon we were walking through more heavy snow showers and the sky looked full  of more to come. By the time we arrived at Hoghton Bottoms things were picking up and, after a short coffee stop on the banks of the River Darwen, we continued on our way passing through Witton Park following the Bottom’s Up! route to Feniscowles.

After leaving Bradley Farm and Red Lea we climbed up snow covered fields to the old hamlet of Tockholes , stopping for our lunch in an old lane before continuing uphill to the old hall with its ‘gardez l’eau’ before descending Roddlesworth Woods to arrive in Abbey Village. After walking up Dole Lane we came to the ‘murder house’ where we turned uphill to cross the moor before  dropping down Well Lane to Brinscall where we had our afternoon stop.

The final part of the walk was hard going after passing Brinscall Hall, climbing fields full of deep snow before dropping down more snow - filled fields to get back to our cars at 3.30pm, everyone safe and sound with no slips on the at times treacherous surfaces.
