Mac's walk, April 18th

The sun was out and a good day was forecast for the sixteen people who assembled at the car park near Holcombe Village for today's walk to be led by Mac Calvert. We set off along the track which runs below Holcombe Tower and followed this for about 2.5 miles. It was somewhere along here that we found out that another General Election was to be held in June - what fun! (?) Shortly before we left this track we came across an old bus, complete with a few suitcases , that had been used as a budget means of transport to get to Benidorm in the past. Thank goodness for Easy Jet and the like nowadays!

We left the moors after passing Little Edge farm and continued for about half a mile along the busy road as far as the turn to Whowells farm. Shortly after this we had our lunch stop which was lovely sitting in the sunshine with no wind for a change. Back on the moors now, we climbed up past the ruined Causeway End farm and dropped down to join a section of the Rossendale Way which we followed round to Burnt Hill. Here we left this Way and continued on the West Pennine Way. This is a fairly new walk, about fifty miles circular in the West Pennine Moors. The section we were on kept high above the Rossendale Way and, after some stiff climbing, we eventually reached the trig point on Bull Hill.

The final couple of miles took us past the Pilgrim's Cross, over Harcles Hill and Holcombe Tower before descending the track back to our cars. Thanks to Mac for not only leading an excellent walk but for organising such good weather in which to do it.
