 Levens Bridge to Windermere

It rained almost all of the day which was very disappointing for the sixteen brave individuals who turned up to walk this final leg. With low clouds there was not much to be seen as we followed the route through, what I’m sure was, very scenic countryside!

We set off walking through Levens Park following the River Kent past Force Falls which were quite spectacular due to the high water level caused by all the recent rain.  A herd of deer watched us very closely as we slipped past.

We left the park following the route of the disused Lancaster Canal before dropping back down to the River Kent which we followed to the outskirts of Kendal.

The route then took us over Scout Scar passing the ‘Mushroom Shelter’. By now we were in mist so with no views to be had today we swiftly moved on following lanes, tracks and paths across some lovely farm land. Fortunately, at lunch time the rain had eased slightly, so we were able to get some shelter under trees at a very pleasant spot on Chapel Lane.

It was then on to the old St. Catherine’s Church tower. We entered the enclosed churchyard for a look around before setting off for our next port of call which was the summit of Grandsire, the first of two Wainwright Outlying fells we would visit.  By the time we reached its summit the clouds had lifted for the first time all day so we were able to see our next port of call, School Knott and our destination Windermere.  We climbed School Knott, the second outlying fell, before dropping down into Windermere.

It was certainly a bit of a relief to get some shelter from the rain at the bus station!
