Chipping, Mar 28th

With a reasonably good weather forecast six of us left Chipping in good spirits for this walk which took us past Wolfen Hall and through fairly dry fields to Blindhurst where we were met by a very friendly chocolate labrador. This dog had followed me and Gareth all the way to Bleasdale Church on our recce and it looked like it might do again but fortunately this time it didn't manage to get through a stile so we only had it's company for a mile or so.Although distant views were hazy the walking was quite pleasant as we made our way past Bleasdale Tower to Stang Yule where we started our ascent up Oakenclough Fell and Hazelhurst Fell to eventually reach the fence at Fiendsdale Head. Compared to our recce, the conditions underfoot were quite good, not totally dry but not that wet we were sinking in the peat. This made for a much quicker crossing across the top to Fairsnape Fell summit, having a lunch stop just before we arrived there.

After lunch we continued on the good track over to Saddle Fell and descended this to Saddle End Farm where we turned left along the track to Burnslack then took the path crossing the stepping stones to reach Lickhurst Farm. Here we turned south through fields to Knot Hill and the last lime kiln in Lancashire where we had a short coffee stop. With only a couple of miles  left to go it looked as though we would get back to our cars without having to put our cags on but alas with less than half an hour left it started to rain so we did the last bit, passing Dairy Barn, a bit damp but still in good spirits getting back to Chipping at 3.25pm.

Thanks to those who came, I hope they all enjoyed the walk.

Doreen
