Ribchester Walk

Ribchester - Tuesday 11th. February 14

On a cold, wet February morning, who would choose to set out on a 10 mile walk through the countryside? The answer is simple - 15 from West Lancs. LDWA.

What those in their warm, dry houses and cars, who saw us heading out of the village, probably didn't appreciate, that in addition to streams to wade, muddy paths and slippery stiles to negotiate, we also visited a 12th. century Norman church, walked through pleasant woodland, saw waterfalls, snowdrops in full bloom, newborn lambs, fine old buildings and, shortly after we set out, were to enjoy the rest of the walk in pleasant sunshine.

What route did we follow? Well, in summary we visited Stydd Church then either passed through, crossed or walked along:- Lower Dutton - Gallows Lane - Duddel Brook - Manor House Farm - Carlinghurst - Lane Ends - New Row - Squire House - Moor Hey and Hoardsell to our lunch stop in Knowle Green.

After our break we continued our walk mainly through fields, past Springs farm - Scott House - Ashmoor House - Singleton House - Parsonage Farm to join the Ribble Way, which we followed back to Ribchester, with it's Roman Museum and fine old church.

Thanks Chris for leading the walk. It was a case of heads down and serious faces to begin with, but all smiles in the end.

Stan.
