A Happy Valley Hobble - Sept 2016

Vermuyden walk 18th September Happy Valley Hobble

Nine walkers left the centre of Halifax on a cool misty Autumn day, we passed redundant mills that were now businesses, shopping centres and apartments and made our way onto the Calderdale way.

We continued on past TV presenter Chris Ackroyds house and then up Hunters Hill our largest climb of the day. After elevenses taken we walked down into Luddenden dale a beautiful steep sided dale where we visited St Mary's church and then visited The Lord Nelson Pub for much needed refreshments as the day had turned sunny and warm.

We continued on past a large number of shelters in the steep sides of the dale and wondered what the long gone mill had produced but now only new houses. We continued on to Luddenden and then onto the Rochdale Canal to make our way back to Halifax via the Greenway. We followed the little used canal to Sowerby Bridge where the canal goes through a loch and then a tunnel under the main road and then called into Weatherspoons for more refreshments.

We continued on the Calder and Hebble canal back to Halifax unfortunately the canal was filled in for the last two miles and was now a path almost into the centre. It was a varied walk with mills, moorland, valleys and canal. Well done Frank super walk.
