Another Wakefield Wobble - 15th December 2013

Eleven walkers ventured forth from Sandal & Agbrigg Station on our annual Christmas bash. We were blessed with ideal conditions for a winter walk - bright skies, dry weather and winter sunshine. Our leaders Tom & John Hughes decided to slightly vary the route in order to avoid the worst of the muddy conditions underfoot so we missed our visit to Sandal Castle but did keep our boots clean for a while. However just prior to our mid morning sojourn in the greasy spoon cafe we were given the option of an alternative route down the road to avoid yet another muddy path and I am delighted to report the the honour of the Group was maintained as the majority of our party opted for the somewhat longer and much muddier original route led by John. A sad minority of our band took the easier and less demanding option with Tom as their leader. We re-assembled in the cafe and enjoyed a well earned (for some of us) and delicious fried breakfast with all the trimmings. Suitably nourished we set off to quickly cross the Calder & Hebble Canal at Calder Grove and then the River Calder through the metal tunnel attached to the railway bridge (a unique must do for anyone that has not experienced it). A gentle few miles beside the River Calder, passing by the Hepworth Gallery, saw us into the centre of Wakefield and to our final objective - Fernandes Bar and Brewery Tap where we were able to relax and enjoy some of the wonderful quality cask ales on offer. A pleasant rail journey home capped a super day out.

Our thanks go to John & Tom Hughes for leading a smashing walk in fine style.
