Thames Valley LDWA: Home Page

Welcome to the web site of the Thames Valley LDWA. Our Group was founded in 1976 and is a friendly, active local walking group covering a large area west of London; you can download a map of the area here. New members are most welcome - please see the membership information on the Admin page.

The arrangements for Chris Lloyd's funeral are described here.

We have a fine selection of social walks throughout the year. Most are in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, or Berkshire, though we occasionally stray further afield. Naturally, the River Thames and the Chiltern Hills feature in many of our walks, which we aim to make friendly and enjoyable outings with a leader to guide us through the day. On most of our walks, unless it says otherwise in the programme, you should bring food and drink for lunch and snacks. If the leader has planned for the group to eat lunch in a pub this will be clearly stated in the programme. Walk Leaders! Please notify any changes to the Walks Co-ordinator or Webmaster.

You will find our walks programme on this website, and it's also published in the LDWA national magazine, "Strider".

AAA walks

We also offer occasional AAA walks (Anything, Anyone, Anywhere). These are walks that are special in some way - maybe longer, harder, at night, with a particular theme; they may not be appropriate for all members and on some walks numbers will be restricted. The description of the walk will try to state accurately the aim of the walk including the expected pace, distance, ascent and time as well as any equipment or preparation required.

Unless otherwise stated in the walk description participants will need to be self-sufficient with appropriate clothing and adequate food and drink for the duration of the walk.

Anyone planning to attend an AAA walk must contact the leader of that particular walk in advance, to check that the walk is suitable for them and that there is a place available. Those turning up without contacting the leader may not be allowed to participate in the walk.

These walks are not listed in Strider, they can be found in the AAA Walks menu at the top of the screen; it is visible only when there is an AAA walk scheduled.

If you have an idea for a walk that you would like, either as a leader or a walker, please contact Ron Doole by email, by phone (01865 750797) or speak to him on a walk.

The Journal

The Journal is our rolling Newsletter where you will find articles and photos by Group members. If you're not (yet) a member it will give you some idea of what we do.

Challenge Event - Oxon 40/20

Our regular annual challenge event is the Oxon 40/20. Both walkers and runners are welcome. It offers a choice of distances - 40 miles or 20 miles - and follows a different route each year. The 40-mile route is good preparation for the annual LDWA 100-mile event and the 20-mile is an ideal introduction to any of the Marathon challenge events in the LDWA calendar.

The 2020 Oxon 40/20 will be held on Saturday 2nd May at Stokenchurch. See the About the Oxon 40/20 page for more details.
