- The Surrey Tops forms part of the Southern KSS Triple Challenge -

 

On the basis of completing the 2021 Surrey Tops, anyone who now qualifies for the KSS Triple Challenge will, in due course, receive their certificate from the Recorder of the KSS. No action required on your part.

If you have qualified for the KSS then congratulations! But why stop there? 6 consecutive completions qualifies you for a silver certificate, 9 a gold, and 12 a platinum. After that, well who knows...

Event Details

The Surrey Tops is a 50 mile cross country walk/run, with 6750ft of ascent/descent, mainly on footpaths and bridleways starting & finishing at Witley with a 20hr time limit. It is open to walkers, joggers and runners. It features a significant amount of night walking/navigation. Route Description & Final Details are available for download shortly before the event (see 'Route' below).

Should the need arise then any changes to the event will be posted on this site and emailed to the email address given during the on-line entry process. 

Parking

Please park on verge NOT in Chichester Hall car park - follow directions of parking marshals. DO NOT obstruct pavements, driveways, gateways or junctions - doing so is likely to jeopardize the future of the event and may lead to a parking ticket. Car-share where possible. Additional parking at rail station 1 mile from venue at SU948379. Please DO NOT PARK in CHURCH LANE or the CHURCH CAR PARK at the TOP of CHURCH LANE or in the forecourt of THE WHITE HART PUB

Requirements

Each entrant must carry their own face covering, hand sanitiser, first aid kit and personal drinking container. Sharing is not permitted. These will be checked at registration. Additional requirements due to the current situation may be notified to entrants by email before the event. Arrangements for sleeping after the event may be different this year.

Map 1:50000 No 186 & 187 or 1:25000 Explorer 133, 134, 145 & 146*, compass, whistle & mapcase, pen/pencil, warm clothing, hat & gloves, waterproofs, good torch, money and spare food & drink. Note that although checkpoints will provide some food & drink you should plan to carry at least some rations of your own to supplement that provided.

All entrants - runners and walkers -  MUST wear reflective items on the back of their rucksack/camelback etc to ensure they are visible to traffic approaching from behind during the hours of darkness.

*print-outs or electronic mapping is acceptable. If electronic, do ensure you have sufficient battery for 20hrs. The coverage you will need can be seen here

Registration

Registration for walkers starts at 0900 and for joggers & runners at 1215

Start

There will be two mass starts - 1000 for walkers & 1300 for joggers & runners.

Those starting before 1300 will be given a 1000 start time, all others will be given a 1300 start time.

Finish

All to finish by 0600 Sun (20hr time limit)

Devised by Tony Cartwright & Keith Chesterton. The route description and GPX file* are available for download - Route.docx GPX.gpx. Note: there are significant changes to the route this year - so don't rely on memory!!!

Please ensure that you print off a copy of the route description before coming to the event as copies will not be available at the start.

*GPX files are provided as support only. The definitive descriptor of the route remains the written Route Description.

Checkpoints

Hot food at end & more substantial hot food at roughly mid-way. Drinks & cold food at 3 other checkpoints. Please bring your own mug.

Note that if you arrive at a checkpoint before its scheduled opening time you will need to wait.

Entry

Entry is on-line only, you can enter here. Positively no entries on the day. Entries close on 6/9/21. Entry fee for LDWA members (Individual and Family only) is £23* and for non-members £41**. If you are under 18 please contact the organiser (see below) before entering.

**Why not join the LDWA (£15 for a year) and enter this and all LDWA events at member rates (including Surrey's Winter Tanners and Punchbowl Marathon). As a member you will also receive a copy of our Strider publication plus many other benefits.

*LDWA membership details are checked at entry. Please ensure you enter your details correctly.  If you receive an error message then carefully read what it suggests.  If you are unsure of your membership details then logon to LDWA Membership to check what the LDWA has on record.  If you can’t logon then please email the LDWA Membership Secretary for assistance - NOT the event organiser.

You are reminded of the 'no substitutions'condition; if your name does not appear on the entry list then you are not eligible to take part. You cannot transfer your entry to someone else

Conditions of Entry

By entering the event you agree to the conditions of entry. Please do read these conditions carefully (they includes safety information), don’t just tick the box when you enter, We want to ensure that we minimise the risks on this tough event and all walkers and runners must be aware of their responsibilities as entrants and the requirements that may be checked before they are allowed to start the event. 

Entrants data will be stored on a computer (in accordance with LDWA national data protection guidelines) and used solely for the purposes of LDWA and this event and will not be shared with anyone else.  By default entrant names will be published on the results pages unless, in making your entry, you ask for your identity to be withheld.

Dogs are not permitted on this event.

Results & Certificates

Certificates are issued on the day to all who follow the route, passing through all checkpoints and successfully complete the distance in the allotted time. 

Friends, Family & Supporters

Once the event has started supporters and friends can follow the progress of (up to 10) selected participants at Public Results by selecting 'follow participants'. If you have supporters on the event you should ask them to bookmark this location on their smarthphone/tablets prior to leaving home. Please ask them to respect the task of the timekeepers and to refer to the Public Results for information about you.

*Marshals & Marshals' Walk

The Marshals' Walk is only open to those that have volunteered to help on the event itself or to those contributing in some other significant way (eg taking entries etc). Event certificates are awarded to successful completions of the Marshals Walk thus contributing towards the KSS Triple Challenge. If you are unable to do the actual event but would like to help and thus be eligible to do the Marshals Walk please contact the event organiser.
