Ostle Hustle

A misty morning greeted us on our arrival at Clough Head Quarry. So did a car park barrier. Our first initiative test soon passed and 6 of us parked up, Norman, Helen, Carol, Virginia, Andrew & myself.

Explored the moors south of the Grane Rd in the morning before going north. Conditions underfoot quite wet following Wednesday's heavy rain but a reasonable pace maintained nonetheless. Late morning the mist lifted and the views began to open up, Pendle Hill and Darwen Tower being prominent, with Ingleborough & Pen Y Ghent in the distance.

We followed a circuitous route, with constant changes of views, taking in places such as Bedlam, Hoyle Bottom and New Waterfoot Papermills before crossing the Grane Rd yet again and splashing across Oswaldtwistle Moor before the sharp descent to the cafe in the car park. Will it be open? It was, and Norman treated us all to a mug of tea. Most welcome after 20.5 miles and over 3000' of ascent.

Unfortunately the journey home took longer than planned due to an overturned car on the M66, but thankfully we were not in it.

My trainers, which had the sole ripped off extricating it from a bog, did not make it home, being thrown in a dustbin en route. I can certainly say a flapping sole is no fun on a wet moor. Perhaps I will dig my boots out after all.
