South of Skipton

16 hardy souls eventually found the car park in the early morning fog although the actual number who tried to find us will never be known. Temperature of 2 degrees so definitely not the weather for shorts.

An easy start downhill into Lothersdale before a bit of a roller coaster to Cowling Hill. Our objective of Wainmans Pinnacle is out of sight in the fog and walkers blissfully unaware of imminent exertions as we stroll alongside Holme Beck amongst the new born lambs.

Sharp pull up to Wainmans and then a pleasant walk along Earl crag to Lunds Tower, a folly that allows internal access to a lofty viewing platform. Several felt they had not done enough ascent so up they went. Shame the views still restricted by fog.

Rapid descent into Crosshills where a short break was taken before the dangerous crossing of the A629 at Steeton. Through a wood where since the recce almost every tree had been felled making progress difficult to say the least. I tried to explain the easy part of the route now completed but not sure I was believed.

Up on to Addingham High Moor with good all round panoramas as the fog had now burnt off. At Black Hill the views to the front suddenly opened up with views forward to Beamsley Beacon and the Yorkshire Dales behind. Lunch taken just before Addingham and we watched a couple with metal detectors scouring a couple of fields. They informed us that they had made £75 from these 2 fields (not sure over what time period) and to ensure their day was not totally wasted a few walkers left some pennies to be found.

Sun now out and at least one smug walker in shorts. The ascent out of Addingham brought back memories for a few as the next 5 miles were the closing stages of the Yoredale 100. Unlike the 100 which descended into Skipton we turned south east uphill over Skipton Moor before descending through woodland towards Cononley.

Yet another climb over Tow Top before a final pull up to Pinhaw Beacon, our first trig point of the day at the 30 mile stage.

Light fading and the weather deteriorating as we sped back to the cars half a mile away.

Stats for the analytical types
30.8 miles, 5354 ft of ascent, 11 hours walking

A tough days walk and for the majority of the group totally new footpaths in an undervisited area offering excellent scenery
