2015 04 04 Ribblehead

Spring finally arrives. A glorious day in prospect and a holiday weekend as well.

We nabbed the best parking spaces within sight of  Ribblehead viaduct, the major attraction on the Settle/ Carlisle railway line. Off we went following the line over Blea Moor before dropping to join the Dales Way at Dent Head (note another viaduct). A pleasant riverside stroll for a mile or so before starting the big climb of the day, Arten Gill. Under yet another railway viaduct and we climb around 1000ft before halting our ascent with a short break. A brief respite only with another 500ft climb to the summit of Great Knoutberry Fell. Stunning views open up of Dentdale, the Howgills, the Three Peaks and the distant Lake District with snow dusting their tops.

Descent to Newby Head and along the Pennine Bridleway to Cold Keld Gate, passing close to the source of the Ribble. Good walking now along the Cam High Road, an ancient route of Roman origin and straight as a die. Just before Gearstones we go left towards Ling Gill. Nobody took advantage of the early opt out. At Nether House we join the route of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for a mile along the road back to Ribblehead.

Super scenery all day and as Ian remarked, we hardly saw a soul all day - they were all doing one of the big three Peaks. When will people realise the Yorkshire Dales have so much more to offer?
