2014 12 11 Mirfield Round

Maxine looking happy - only 4 miles to the finish!!

15 hardy souls turned up on Station Road including 1 guest (Maxine)-the weather was kind, just a gentle breeze and quite mild. The party set off with a steady climb up Royds Lane and onwards to Lepton via Houses Hill. Conditions underfoot were varied, mud, water and tarmac. The morning break was taken in the porch of Emley Church, very cosy. We were invited by the caretaker to enter the church and use a very welcome facility (WC) if required. The road through Emely had a light covering of snow which made walking more like skating through the village. The route next skirted around Flockton and took us past New Hall HMP towards Overton. Picking up the Kirklees Way, we followed Thornhill Edge towards Thornhill Lees and a welcome descent to the River Calder. A brisk walk along the river and canal had us back to Mirfield having walked 19 miles with around 2000’ of ascent.
