An early start planned - too early for the water board as the car park still locked when we arrived. Neil solved the problem of access and moves to stage 2 of the Krypton factor. Set to go at 8am but a quick check reveals 2 more folk struggling with car park access. Eventually start around 8.15am, 15 minutes later than scheduled.

Good turnout with 17 walkers including guests from Durham, Cheshire & West Yorkshire. Debbie agreed to take photos if she got a mention on the site again. Kevin makes his debut on the walks and Sue ventures out for the first time since 2009. Norman voluntarily assumes the role of backmarker as we are not used to such a turnout.

The recent rain sat on top of the frozen ground as we slogged our way up on to Turton Moor from Entwistle reservoir. Some bog hopping followed on our way to Darwen Tower, which had recently been decapitated by gales. Locals have an appeal under way to restore the tower. Bitter winds didn't stop the majority going up to the viewing platform. Half the walk now done.

Descent into the valley out of the wind and a pleasant walk through various patches of woodland followed before lunch taken at Hollinghall. The ruined hall provided adequate seating for lunch although few seemed interested in the history of the place. Talk consisted primarily of the previous weeks Xmas do involving ten pin bowling (Andy & Julie won for those who care) with our visitors from Durham reminiscing about the Coast to Coast where they had met Andy,Sue & Kevin.

Homeward bound now and Sue strode out at the front of the walk, her earlier malaise now evaporated as the miles counted down. Will we spot The Irregulars? They were known to be in the area. Suspected sighting as we approached Dimple but too far away to confirm.

Return via Last Drop village and back at cars 7 hours after leaving with 19.5 miles under our belts. Still enough time to drop into the cafe at Jumbles Reservoir (use it or lose it) for a cuppa
